It might have been... Scratch that... It most likely was because he didn't get a chance with you. You said he was scared that you were mad at him, but kept trying anyway. If he didn't care for you, I don't think he would have tried at all. But if he's still thinking he doesn't have a chance, he might be a little sad about it.
